TPS:n 17-vuotias juniorihyökkääjä Lauri Korpikoski varattiin kesän draftissa NHL:ään ensimmäisen kierroksen kolmantena suomalaisena ja kaiken kaikkiaan 19:ntenä pelaajana. Siksipä Turun Sanomat ei väitä turhaan, että Korpikoski on askeleen lähempänä NHL-unelmaa.

Korpikosken varanneen New York Rangersin verkkosivuilla kerrotaan, että Rangers teki kovasti töitä Korpikosken varaamiseksi: he treidasivat varausnumerot 24 ja 46 Calgary Flamesin vuoroihin 19 ja 247.

It speaks volumes when a team stocked with several picks in the first two rounds of the NHL Entry Draft makes a trade to move up to select a specific player in fear that he will be gone when the club’s next turn to make a selection comes around.

Kuten kaikilla seuroilla, myös Rangersillä on vain ylisanoja sanottavana varauksestaan:

“We had Korpikoski near the top of our draft chart,” said Rangers Assistant General manager and Vice President of Player Personnel Don Maloney. “He has tremendous ability. He can skate, he’s physical, and he makes plays. In our eyes, he was the hidden gem of the Draft and we worked hard to move up to be in a position to select this player. There’s nothing about this kid not to like. Korpikoski is the kind of player who you can win a championship with and we’re thrilled to have him in the organization.”
